The figure of speech “jack of all trades, master of none” had a very crippling effect on my creative psyche. I have always been enticed by the entire spectrum of the visual arts and was convinced I would celebrate an epiphany about what medium I could quest and conquer once I began art school. That never happened. But, I did discover the solace I required, when I took my first fiber class. In fact, the actual figure of speech reads, “jack of all trades, master of none, though oft times better than master of one.” Fiber made me appreciate my love for mixed media so that I could allow myself to combine performance, sculpture, texture, color, humor, beauty, and all the aspects I treasure about the visual arts to help share my personal story.
My current body of work addresses social traps. I am exploring how American culture imposes some of these traps upon us and how they can become torturous, such as domesticity and aging. Other traps such as beauty and self image we often create for ourselves. I am also exploring the prescriptions for masculinity and femininity and the traps these can create.
