SCULPTURE > To Gnome Me is to Love Me

These six gnomes are from Residency in the Garden in Portland Oregon where I stayed a week in a tent in a backyard garden. I cast myself, the curator, and four other artists that were all part of the residency in some form or another. It seemed fitting to put them all with glittered lipstick, eyeshadow, fake nails, eyelashes and beards because as a group our relation to gender covered a huge spectrum. We also all seemed to feel a bit out of societies' norms and I couldn't help but ponder the gnomes as being a bit of a freak show with magical powers. Many cultures have considered homosexuals and transgender people to have supernatural gifts, although not all of the artists cast as gnomes would label themselves as queer. This seem to connect us all in a very odd way.
